VMware: ESXi Active Directory integration and default AD group

Posted by bartvdw on 0202/0505/2013

Came across this nice to know configuration item when joining ESXi hosts in Active Directory: the default AD group “ESX Admins”. Read the link below for details!

VMware: Using esxcli (VMware vSphere CLI)

Posted by bartvdw on 2323/0404/2013

Some useful commands (I think so) for VMware vSphere CLI, some of them are also valid when working with vMA (not all).

esxcli -s <IP/hostname> -u <user> -p <password> system maintenanceMode -e True/False
esxcli -s <IP/hostname> -u <user> -p <password> system shutdown reboot -d=<time-out> -r=<reason>
esxcli -s <IP/hostname> -u <user> -p <password> software vib update -d=/vmfs/volumes/<datastore>/<folder>/<update>.zip

Using these simple commands allows you quick and easy patching, reboot, or putting a host into maintenance mode. Note that the command to install updates is using a VMFS datastore as source, there are other possibilities.

esxcli -s <IP/hostname> -u <user> -p <password> system coredump network get
esxcli -s <IP/hostname> -u <user> -p <password> system coredump network set –internface-name vmk0 –server-ipv4 <IP Core Dump Collector> –server-port 6500 (or custom port depending your configuration)
esxcli -s <IP/hostname> -u <user> -p <password> system coredump network set -e True/False

The above commands allows you to configure the Dump Collector settings on ESXi hosts.

Feel free to comment!

VMware: Cannot join ESXi 5.0 host to AD

Posted by bartvdw on 2323/0404/2013

Came across an issue when trying to joining ESXi 5.0 hosts to AD, it kept returning me an error “The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted”. Checked the configuration (DNS, NTP, …) but was unable to find anything wrong.

Then found a KB explaining to temporarily disable the firewall or create a firewall rule to allow TCP port 53 outgoing… All very nice however some guy (patm521) suggested another workaround which actually works fast! Enable NFS Client rule in the security profile, join to AD, disable the NFS Client rule. That’s it!

PS: Only saw this for ESXi 5.0 hosts, didn’t have the issue (yet) for 5.1 hosts…
