Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R2 with hotfix 143746 installed & Exchange 2003 GRT backups

Posted by bartvdw on 2121/0101/2011

Some time ago backups started failing for Microsoft Exchange 2003 server, GRT option enabled using Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R2. The error message was "Cannot log on to MAPI with the specified credentials.". This error message pointed me in direction that there was an issue with the credentials, however the backups have ran always without any problem and no change was executed in this direction.

The original setup for this backup was first to disk, then duplicate to tape. During my investigation I changed the job to use tape directly as test. This caused the error message to change: "Unable to complete the operation for the selected resource using the specified options. The following error was returned when opening the Exchange Database file: ‘-528 The current log file is missing. ‘".

This finally has lead me to a KB from Symantec that this is caused by hotfix 143746 for Backup Exec 2010 R2.

Disabled Advanced Open File Option, job runs fine again.
